What is a Location/Monitoring PC/Site/Panel in my Cloud Monitored network?

Before we created the cloud monitoring service for Lux Intelligent, an Lux Intelligent emergency light testing network would have consisted of a group of testing panels connected to emergency lights, and a PC running the Logger Tool software which would periodically connect to the panels to download their test result data.

If you had a larger "site" then you may have had multiple PCs across the site, each connecting to their own set of panels.

When we designed the Lux Intelligent cloud monitoring system we knew that there would need to be a way to identify firstly which Monitoring PC some testing data had come from, and secondly a way to group Monitoring PCs to a phyiscal location.  i.e. Take the example of a Facilities Management company who monitor and maintain emergency lighting at locations in Edinburgh, Leeds and London.  There needs to be a mechanism to differentiate the Edinburgh data from the London data.

Therefore we designed the following system hierarchy:

Emergency Lighting Hierarchy Explaination Diagram

  • Account Name: This represents your account within the Lux Intelligent monitoring system.  This acts as an umberella under which all of your emergency lighting systems are grouped.
  • Location Name: This is the name of the physical location.  If you are a facilities management company, this could be the client name and geographical location.  If you are responsible for your own emergency lighting system then you Location can be used to break up a large site geographically, i.e. North, South, East, West locations of your facility.  You specify the Location Name when installing the Lux Intelligent Sync Tool on the Monitoring PC.
  • Monitoring PC Name: This is the name you give to a PC which is running the Logger Tool software and is responsible for downloading test results from a number of panels.  Depending on the site of your site, and geographical layout you may have 1 or many Monitoring PCs per Location.  You specify the Monitoring PC name when installing the Cloud Monitoring Sync Tool on the Monitoring PC.
  • Site Name: A site groups together a collection of Panels.  You specify the Site Name when configuring your site design on the Logger Tool on the Monitoring PC.  Our customers commonly use a building name as the Site Name, and then install a Panel per floor in that building to reduce cabling and networking costs.
  • Panel Name: This is a recognisable name given to a panel.  If you follow the example of having a Panel per floor in a building and using the building name as the Site name, then you would name your panels "Basement", "Ground Floor", "Floor 1", "Floor 2" etc.
